Our professional figure skating instructors are just that: Professional. We pride ourselves on the fact that all of our instructors were previous USFS and ISI competitors. Our instructors have an average of 15 years of personal figure skating experience and an average of 10 of years teaching experience.
As a new parent of a figure skater there is probably some lingo that you don’t quite understand. Let us help you get a basic understanding of what to look for in a rinks professional figure skating staff.
Figure skating is a sport that requires dedication, commitment and focus to learn the required elements and excel in them. We want to make sure that if your child is dedicated to the sport of figure skating that they are receiving the best instruction.
- The majority of our staff has passed through the highest levels attainable in USFS or ISI. When an instructor has personally passed through the highest levels in USFS as a previous competitive skater they will receive a gold medal given by United States Figure Skating. Coaches with this distinguished title will claim they are double gold medalist. This means they passed their Senior Freeskate test and Senior Moves In the Field test. On average this takes a skater 5-10 years to accomplish and there are 8 levels to pass through.
- It is important to look for coaches who continue to invest in their own personal development. The Professional Skaters Association was developed to help coaches continue their personal coaching development through tests and seminars. This Association also helps to set a standard in figure skating and works to hold coaches accountable for their actions. Many of our coaches are PSA members.
- In the sport of figure skating there are currently two organizations that work at developing figure skating programs and rinks will use their methods and levels as a benchmarking system and standard for the sport. Those organizations are USFS and ISI. USFS stands for United States Figure Skating and ISI stands for Ice Skating Institute. The Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy is a USFS basic skills member. The USFS basic skills program provides:
- The official learn-to skate program of the National Governing Body for figure skating.
- The road to the Olympics
- Highest quality instruction
- Fun, challenging and rewarding skating curriculums for all ages and abilities
- Bridge to U.S. Figure Skating testing and competitive structure.
We believe in starting our figure skaters off on the right foot. We realize not all skaters will become competitive figure skaters, but we believe in providing our entry level skaters with the program that is created by the organization that currently sets the standard for figure skating. This is the organization that all skaters wishing to skate for the United States Figure Skating must pass through.
